Qualifications:

 

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Must possess valid State of Michigan Nursing License
  • BLS certified
  • ACLS certified within 6 months of hire
  • TNCC certified within 1 year of hire
  • 2 years previous experience as an RN in PACU

Preferred: 

  • Previous experience working in OR/PACU/OP/ENDO
  • Previous experience working in critical care
  • Previous work experience within the specific unit specialty
  • Specialty certification within the specific unit

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities in age-specific categories being served: infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric

Position Specific Expectations:

Pre-Op/Holding

  • Establish patient’s baseline assessment of vitals
  • Perform pre-operative assessment, tests and procedures as required and ensure all are complete prior to surgery
  • Provides and completes necessary documentation required for procedure
  • Educate patient on any pre-operative care or instructions prior to surgery.
  • Possess the ability to perform interviewing and assessment techniques to identify potential/actual problems related to anesthesia and relevant surgical procedure.  Consult anesthesiologist/physician when appropriate using assertive communication skills
  • Demonstrates knowledge of ASA and Anesthesia Guidelines
  • Utilize and troubleshoot specialty equipment (blood glucose monitor, IV pumps, vein finder, ARJO lift, EKG machine in an independent safe manner

  • Deals with and maintains highly confidential patient medical information
  • Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the Medical Center, as well as the focus statement of the unit
  • Complies with the organizational policies and procedures
  • Completes annual education requirements specific to unit
  • Attends department in-services as required
  • Participates in Medical Center and/or departmental quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities as directed through identification of quality improvement opportunities, goal setting, collection and evaluation of data, implementation of action plans or related applications
