Referral Specialist Oncology
Under general supervision, processes patient referrals from and to other healthcare practices per provider request. Ensures that patients receive information regarding their referral prior to their scheduled appointment with the external provider. Ensures that all new patient records are received prior to the initial scheduled visit to the clinic. Processes proper insurance authorizations prior to patient’s scheduled appointments and verifies that new patient insurance is current and participates with organization.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
1. Schedule’s patient appointments for testing, treatments, specialty consultation home and hospice care as directed by the referring patient’s healthcare provider.
2. Contacts health insurance providers to obtain insurance authorization as needed.
3. Prepares and sends appropriate patient information to referred service/practice.
4. Reviews and enters chart information into electronic health records as it pertains to patient referral.
5. Answers questions regarding patient referral process.
6. Reviews content of new patient referrals and obtains appropriate records prior to scheduling the appointment.
7. Works with clinical staff when needed to evaluate the timing of scheduling the new patient appointment.
8. Evaluates and schedules new patient referrals. Communicates with referring organization and patient with details of appointments.
9. Documents in EHR the communication and status of new patient appointment.
10. Maintains strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.
11. Collects payments to cover co-payment, deductibles, and other appropriate fees and schedules follow-appointments if required.
12. Other job duties as assigned.
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One-year clerical experience in an acute care setting or physician office.
Preferred:
- Some college coursework in healthcare related curriculum including a medical terminology course.
- Experience with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) programs.
