The radiation therapist safely and correctly operates radiation producing equipment to simulate patients for treatment and administer radiation therapy treatments, as prescribed by the radiation oncologist. Responsible for quality assurance projects, radiation safety, and training of staff/students. Leads other radiation therapists and provides technical oversight of radiation therapy services.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities as Assigned:
- Administers radiation treatments as prescribed by the radiation oncologist.
- Maintains EMR and other documentation related to treatment simulation and delivery.
- Performs simulation procedures, as ordered by the radiation oncologist, for the purpose of treatment planning.
- Fabricates treatment immobilization devices and treatment aids, as ordered by the radiation oncologist, for the purpose of treatment planning.
- Participates in imaging and alignment procedures for radiation treatment delivery, as directed by the radiation oncologist.
- Schedules simulation and treatment appointments; facilitates communication of scheduling with patient and staff.
- Captures and verifies/corrects all charges for services rendered.
- Responsible for patient education and associated documentation.
- Follows radiation safety protection guidance and ALARA principles for patients and personnel.
- Utilizes incident reporting and learning system for reporting near misses, variances, and unsafe conditions, and responsible for corrective actions.
- Performs machine, equipment, and treatment plan quality assurance.
- Responsible for quality assurance and continuous quality improvement programs for radiation therapists.
- Develops standards, policies/procedures, and competency standards for therapists.
- Responsible for clinical training of radiation oncology staff where applicable.
- Provides support to and ensures appropriate coverage at network sites as necessary.
- Oversees relevant technology implementation, simulation and treatment delivery techniques, workflow, care paths, EMR documentation standards, quality improvement, and other initiatives.
- Functions as lead therapist; contributes to performance evaluations and annual assessments.
- Engages directly with leadership in program development and growth projects.
- Performs other duties as requested.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Associate degree in radiation therapy.
- Board certified in radiation therapy from American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
- BLS certification as healthcare provider or obtains within 6 months of employment as a radiation therapist.
- Five years prior experience working as a board-certified radiation therapist, including two years of demonstrated leadership.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in radiation therapy.
- Active member of the American Society of Radiation Therapists (ASRT)
