Position Summary:

Maintains gas, water, air, and waste disposal systems in good repair.  Installs and repairs sinks, toilets, flush valves, pumps, pipes, fittings and fixtures working from blueprints, or by following oral and written instructions.  Estimates material requirements and costs.  Tests joints and piping systems for leaks.  Periodically inspects air, water, and gas piping systems to locate and correct problems prior to becoming an emergency situation.  Installs and repairs medical gas piping systems.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

1.   Unclogs drains using several types and cutting head attachments to augur type sewer cleanout machines.

2.   Replaces cracked, broken and rotten piping systems above ceilings and below floors.

3.   Modifies piping systems to accept additional sinks, toilets and drains in compliance with local plumbing codes and standards.

4.   Installs piping for proper drainage of HVAC equipment.

5.   Plans piping installations by studying, in compliance with local plumbing codes/standards, by using as-builts and blueprints for installation or removal of sinks, toilets and drains.

6.   Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, pulleys, and other parts of pumps moving air, water or sewage.

7.   Prepares order form for tools and supplies necessary for maintenance and repairs of plumbed systems or related equipment.

8.   Dismantle machines or HVAC equipment using coolant water to repair defective parts associated with the water-cooling function.

9.   Test, replace, and install plumbing components to fixtures and valves.

10. Cuts glass and metal piping components to waste water systems.

11. Threads, solders and brazes metal piping systems during the repair or installation of plumbing or air-conditioning systems.

12. Knowledgeable of building management systems known as "METASYS", performs standard duties as systems operator and can detect trouble in these systems with reasonable success at least 70% of the time.

13. Can diagnose and correct problems in Computerized Tube Delivery system (Translogic Tube System), requiring immediate responses to operational failures of varying nature with success rate of over 75%.

14. Repair to mechanical equipment, plumbing, painting, various types of structural repair, and minor electrical repairs.

15. Performs other related job duties as requested.

Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of prior work experience
  • Course work should include one or more of the following: general shop work, sheet-metal working, electrical house wiring, piping installation, air conditioning and heating, steam powered equipment, and appliances used in plumbing and draining systems. Coursework desirable in some of the following: general shop work, sheet-metal working, electrical house wiring, piping installation, air conditioning and heating, and steam powered equipment.
  • Valid Journeyman’s Plumbers’ License
  • Backflow certification required within 9 months of starting date
  • Must possess valid Michigan Driver’s License and be insurable under the hospital insurance program
 
Preferred: 
  • One to two years of formal education or training beyond High School(Specified above)
  • Master Plumbers License
  • Medical gas system installer certification
