Perioperative Technician
Dept: Surgical Services
Schedule: 6a-2:30p & 6a-6:30pm
Hours per pay period: 40 (part-time, 20 hours per week)
Position Summary:
Under general supervision, performs routine perioperative procedures, which are required before surgery. Provides support to the physicians, nursing staff, Assistant & Clinical Manager, PCS and Director of Perioperative and Anesthesia Services.
The Perioperative Technician will keep abreast of surgical boarding for the Anesthesia department. Maintains professionalism in dealings with patients and families. Skilled in performing routine EKG’s and phlebotomy to obtain blood specimens from adults, children and infants and starting IVs on patients older than 12 years of age.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Monitors and assists with flow of OR boardings, anticipating patient’s arrival and assisting Registered Nurse in the pre and post-operative phase.
- Works with ancillary departments to facilitate patient visits.
- Maintains conducive communication with POS Clerk, Registered Nurse, physicians, etc. to promote a productive working environment.
- Utilizes computer to order tests and retrieve results.
- Reviews chart for needed testing.
- Enters lab tests into computer if not already done in Pre-Admission Testing.
- Collects laboratory specimens per requested orders, utilizing proper procedure for exposure to body fluids. Collects and delivers all specimens to laboratory.
- Assist nurses by taking vital signs and performing necessary surgical hair clipping preps, accepting patient in pre-op and PACU; also assist physician with physical exams.
- Assist with pre and post-operative transfer of patients as needed.
- Retrieve charts when necessary from Medical Records/Pre-Admission Testing.
- Starts new IVs on patients 12 years and older, as ordered (18G standard and restarts IVs as needed) after skills validation is confirmed. ONLY RN can hang/attach any IV fluids.
- Assists with discharge of patients to home via wheelchair.
- Stocks unit with supplies and facilitates monitoring and ordering of supplies as needed.
- Assist with orientation of new personnel.
- Maintains an active role in the QA program of department.
- Participates in hospital committees when requested.
- Promotes professional growth through continuing education and attendance at in-service programs.
- Reports any concerns to Manager.
- Performs other related job duties as requested.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 6 mos. of direct patient care experience in an acute-care setting
- BLS certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent, is required before start date and valid at least 60 days beyond start date.
Preferred:
- One year of direct patient care experience in an acute-care setting
- Skilled in phlebotomy, insertion of IV lines and performance of routine EKG
- Knowledge of medical terminology
