Position Summary:  Provides Radiation Oncology Department with physics services to ensure a high level of radiation treatment quality and patient/staff safety.  Participates in radiation equipment/software quality assurance program, treatment planning procedures, brachytherapy and special procedures, ensuring radiation equipment performance/maintenance, radiation safety and staff training. Works independently and assumes responsibility for all applicable treatment modalities.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities as Assigned:

1.      Establishes radiation beam characteristics for clinical usage.

2.      Calibrates radiation therapy equipment, performs quality assurance checks, and coordinates with service engineering to perform basic troubleshooting and repairs.

3.      Consults with clinical and medical staff on simulation and patient setups, and treatment planning.

4.      Provides ongoing oversight of quality and safety of patient treatment delivery.

5.      Provides treatment planning (external beam, brachytherapy), quality assurance checks.

6.      Responsible for brachytherapy source storage, inventory, accountability, safety handling, ordering procedure preparation, and participation in procedures.

  1. Responsible for accreditation and regulatory compliance, machine registration, license renewal and amendment.
  2. Responsible for facility planning, shielding design and evaluation.
  3. Responsible for radiation safety and radiation protection guidance for the cancer center, and staff training.
  4. Attends Radiation Safety Committee.
  5. Responsible for department quality assurance and continuous quality improvement programs.
  6. Ensures modalities are eligible for clinical trials, including phantom testing, QA and accreditation. Actively participates in clinical research efforts.
  7. Responsible for clinical training of radiation oncology staff where applicable.
  8. Provides support to system sites as necessary.
  9. Trains and guides physicists and dosimetrists
  10. Actively contributes to system initiatives for technology implementation and quality improvement.
