Position Summary: Provides overall technical direction and administration to Infectious Disease department, ensuring it operates efficiently and effectively.  Regularly reviews and revises, as necessary, infectious diseases standards and ensures procedures performed comply with all hospital, system, and regulatory agency standards.  Fosters continued development of a comprehensive, integrated plan for infection surveillance, prevention, control, and process improvement throughout the organization.  Works with clinicians and administrators to improve patient outcomes and reduce Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) and related adverse events. 

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities as Assigned:

  • Plans and administers directly, and through subordinate supervisory personnel, the effective management of infection prevention procedures in accordance with all hospital, system, and regulatory agency standards.
  • Develops, reviews and revises policies and procedures based on evidence-based practice that protect the health and safety of patients, hospital staff, and the community.
  • Develops, secures approval of and administers capital and operating budgets in order to meet agreed-upon departmental goals and objectives.  Develops and implements appropriate methods to monitor adherence to budgets and resolve variances.
  • Responsible for facilitating a comprehensive and effective surveillance, prevention, and control program to ensure quality care as it relates to nosocomial infections in patients, employees, physicians, and visitors.
  • Develops and supports a system for regular collection, analysis and dissemination of surveillance data based upon standard definitions.
  • Supports and directs data collection and research for key infection related clinical and operational activities. Utilizes data to support and evaluate outcomes for interventional programs.
  • Performs or directs qualitative review of patient records for nosocomial-health care associated infections.
  • Provides educational programs and serves as a resource to hospital personnel to present infection prevention and control procedures and practices.  Participates in the development and maintenance of educational information.
  • Provides data to local, state, and federal public health agencies regarding reportable communicable disease.
  • Intervenes directly to interrupt the transmission of infectious diseases and participates in   emergency management plans as appropriate.
  • Works collaboratively with hospital and clinic personnel to ensure compliance with all legal and accreditation standards as well as other standards/guidelines that pertain to infection prevention and control.
  • Ensures the attainment of objectives through the selection, development, training, and evaluation of staff.
  • Performs other related duties as required and directed.

Qualifications:

Required:

·         Bachelor’s degree in nursing, public health, or epidemiology.

·         Three years of work experience in infection prevention and control.

·         Certification in Infection Control (CIC) required within three years of date of hire.

 

     Preferred: 

  • Master’s degree in nursing, public health, or epidemiology.
  • Current state licensure as a registered nurse.
  • Completion of APIC Infection Control and Epidemiology Coursework.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC).
