The Tumor Registry Manager is responsible for the daily operations of the department ensuring the attainment of departmental performance standards by providing leadership, knowledge, expertise, support, and guidance to staff; manages the tumor registry and associated quality initiative databases and projects for McLaren Greater Lansing; oversees systems to assure systematic ascertainment, analyzing, documenting, and coding of all reportable conditions according to International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O) coding conventions, North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR), Commission on Cancer, National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), and the Michigan Cancer Surveillance Program (MCSP) standards. 

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: 

 

1.      Establishes, monitors, and evaluates departmental operations, program planning and budget, staffing, productivity and performance improvement measures.

2.      Supervises daily activities of CTR staff involved with routine registry operations (case-finding, abstracting, visual editing, follow-up, chart review, and other duties as directed.)

3.      Hires, develops, supervises, evaluates, disciplines, and terminates staff.

4.      Coordinates activities of all registry and quality initiative projects and staff to assure timely, efficient and accurate data is maintained in the registry and quality initiative databases.

 

5.      Participates or delegates other registry and quality initiative staff to actively participate in tumor boards, cancer committee and disease specific advisory boards.

 

6.      Provides data to administration for business line development.

 

7.      Performs case-finding on all reportable conditions through examination of all pathology reports, radiation and medical oncology records and review of the monthly cancer cases through the master disease index.

 

8.      Monitors data standards websites for updates/changes and disseminates information to staff.

 

9.      Responsible for maintaining thorough, accurate and current training materials and programs.

 

10.  Abstracts a comprehensive data set on all reportable conditions in a timely manner utilizing history/physical, operative reports, pathology reports, radiology reports, treatment records, laboratory reports, and other pertinent records, including non-hospital records, to document demographics, primary site, morphology, stage, extent of disease, and treatment.

 

11.  Must be familiar with characteristics of different types of cancers, including typical disease progression, relative prognoses and standards of care along with familiarity of National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines.

 

12.  Abstracts patient data into the electronic database, adhering to the standards set for the by the Commission on Cancer and the Michigan Cancer Surveillance Program.

13.  Thorough knowledge and accurate application of collaborative stage, ICD-O-3 (International Classification of Disease for Oncology, Third Edition) coding, SEER summary staging, AJCC staging, multiple primary and histology coding rules, and the hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms database.

 

14.  Accurately interpret and comply with the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Commission on Cancer (COC) standards for hospital category.  Comply with National Cancer Data Base timetable and guidelines. 

 

15.  Prepares for the accreditation survey, completing the Survey Application Record (SAR) and coordinating attendance of key players.

 

16.  Coordinates cancer committee duties such as registry activities, tumor boards, process improvement studies, and the dissemination of data. 

 

17.  Must demonstrate proficiency utilizing electronic medical records, cancer registry systems, radiation oncology systems and other programs available for identifying and abstracting of required data. Utilizing a variety of on-line computer systems for retrieval of information required for the tumor registry. ie: Metriq, Mosiaq, Paragon.

 

18.  Establish and maintain professional liaisons with hospitals, radiation and medical oncology facilities and physicians.

 

19.  Maintains continuing education per Commission on Cancer guidelines for CTR staff by attending local, state, and national educational activities.

 

20.  Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

  

21.  Preserves the confidentiality and security of patient data stored in the Tumor Registry database.

 

22.  Participates in Medical Center and/or departmental quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities as directed through identification of quality improvement opportunities, goal setting, collection and evaluation of data, implementation of action plans, or related applications.

 

23.  Uses abstracted data to prepare specialized reports, research projects, quality improvement studies, statistical reports, research life time follow-up and education as requested by multidisciplinary departments involved with cancer activities.


Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management or related field.

  • Certified Tumor Registered (CTR) through National Cancer Registrars Association.

  • Five years progressively more responsible cancer registry related work experience.


Preferred:

  • Three years related management experience.
