Processes blood specimens for testing. Enters collections of such specimens in lab information system. Assists medical technologists and/or pathologists in performing designated laboratory tests. Assists with maintaining laboratory equipment and records following established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards.
 
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  1. Labels, processes and delivers specimens for testing.
  2. Maintains supplies and equipment.
  3. May assist with coordinating and conducting blood drives, including interviewing and screening donors.
  4. Answers telephone calls, performs computer print reports and provides test results, as applicable.
  5. Collects, verifies, and processes patient registration data and test order/entry into hospital information system/laboratory information system.
  6. Obtains proper patient identification based on credentials presented, and communicates exceptions.
  7. Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.
  8. Performs other related duties as required and directed.
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training course in approved program.
  • Experience or training in a laboratory setting or medical office.
 
Preferred:  
  • Medical assistant experience or related courses.
  • Diploma/certificate from an accredited phlebotomy or medical assistant training program.
  • Certified as a phlebotomy technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC).
  • One year of experience in specimen collection (i.e. phlebotomy), specimen processing and distribution, or providing clerical assistance in a laboratory setting.
