Laboratory Assistant II
LAB ASSISTANT II PART TIME - DAY/AFTERNOON SHIFTS - VARIABLE HOURS
Position Summary: Collects and prepares blood samples for laboratory testing. Enters collections of such specimens in lab information system. Assists medical technologists and/or pathologists in performing designated laboratory tests. Assists with maintaining laboratory equipment and records following established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Uses skin puncture and venipuncture techniques to obtain blood samples.
- Follows defined process in obtaining samples including verifying patient information, labeling specimen vials, and matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Disposes of contaminated needles in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
- Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
- Enters patient, specimen, insurance or billing information into appropriate system.
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training course in approved program.
Preferred:
- Certified as a phlebotomy technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOR).
