Position Summary:

Responsible for the organization, operation, and development of the medical library system to provide materials and services to support staff in providing excellent patient care. Responsible for ensuring adequate provision of reference information and other educational materials for Hospital staff use including conducting literature searches and providing instruction in use of Library’s print and electronic resources and educational technology equipment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide research and reference services to library patrons.
  • Produce bibliographies through computerized data base searching.
  • Provides instruction and support for library and information services users.
  • Help locate materials and direct to alternative sources of information when necessary.
  • Obtains materials through electronic and print resources.
  • Supervise selection and organization of library materials. Select books and other materials using reviews, staff requests, recommended lists and usage statistics.
  • Online catalog maintenance and organization using an established system such as National Library of Medicine, Library of Congress or Dewey Decimal System.
  • Develop and implement existing policies and procedures that assure the smooth functioning of the library.
  • Maintains library usage records.
  • Promotes and maintains effective working relationships within the McLaren Health Care System as well as with other hospital departments and with the libraries of other organizations.
  • Participates on McLaren Health Care Corporation committees as assigned, submits agenda items based upon library issues to be discussed, procedures to be approved or revised and other relevant information.
  • Performs all other duties as required or directed.
  • Qualifications:

   Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an A.L.A accredited program or within 12 months of accepting the position.
  • 3 years’ experience in a Medical Library setting.

Preferred: 

  • Academy of Health Information Professionals Credentialing (AHIP).
  • 3 years professional (post Master’s) library experience in a Medical or Academic Library setting.
