Dosimetrist
Provides the Radiation Oncology Department with treatment planning services for cases of simple to intermediate complexity and with supervision creates and assists in the creation of treatment plans for cases of advanced complexity or utilizing advanced modalities. Participates in quality assurance programs, radiation safety, and training.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Designs patient external beam treatment plans by means of computer aided and/or manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose in accordance with the Radiation oncologist’s prescription to a defined treatment volume while minimizing radiation tosurrounding tissue and organs.
- Identifies and contours relevant organs at risk for a given treatment site for use in treatment plan optimization.
- Performs image registration and fusion for diagnostic image studies and previous CT simulations for use in target and structuredelineation and evaluation of previously delivered dose.
- Provide guidance and oversight for CT/clinical simulations and treatment plan implementation as needed, including use ofimmobilization devices, compensators, motion management, and other treatment variables.
- Assists with coordination and communication of planning workflow with therapy, physics, and physicians.
- Maintains EMR and other documentation related to treatment planning to facilitate treatment delivery.
- Captures and verifies/corrects all charges for medical physics and dosimetry services rendered.
- Performs and/or assists in the design and/or production of molds/cutouts/compensators used for treatment delivery.
- Under general supervision, creates treatment plans for electron, 2D, 3D, IMRT, and stereotactic treatments.
- Assists in creation of treatment plans using advanced modalities such as brachytherapy, proton therapy, TBI, gamma knife, etc.
- Utilizes incident reporting and learning system for reporting near misses, variances, and unsafe conditions.
- Participates in departmental quality meetings, chart rounds, and other initiatives.
- Sends and/or receives electronic DICOM data for treatment planning, clinical research, or continuity of care purposes.
- Follows department and organization policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s degree in medical dosimetry or in the final 6 months of clinical rotations of a dosimetry program.
Board certification within two years of hiring. Candidates hired prior to graduation may be granted an extension.
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
- Master’s degree in medical dosimetry.
- Active member of the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD)
