Position Summary:

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, performs the receptionist and secretarial duties on the unit assigned. Meets the communication needs of the patient (family, departmental staff and medical staff). Supports the nursing staff by performing basic nursing care to the patient. Assist and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Maintains patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and respects patient’s rights.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs purposeful hourly rounding including: Pain, Position, Personal needs, and Possessions
  2. Promptly answer’s telephone/call lights in a polite manner and relaying pertinent information to the appropriate staff
  3. Assists nursing staff by making patient beds, giving baths, passing waters, feeding patients, oral care, accurate I & O, ambulating patients, daily weights, and vital signs and any other duties assigned by the RN
  4. Greets every patient/family in the room upon arrival to the nursing unit and assists in the transportation of patients to and from other units and test areas
  5. Ensures all rooms and work areas are clean and tidy (e.g. patient rooms, clean utility, and soiled utility), IV poles, suction machines, commodes are cleaned and properly stored
  6. Has working knowledge of our electronic health record system and computer
  7. Upon discharge of patient, prepares room for new patient including removal of IV poles, commodes, urinals, and suction canisters
  8. Accurately transcribes and processes physician orders
  9. Orders and maintains supplies and forms
  10. Maintains census board of admissions, discharges and transfers to and from unit and completes assigned board
  11. Maintains appropriate documentation, update charts accurately and timely, anticipates admits and discharges ensuring proper paperwork is in place
  12. Monitors cardiac monitors and reports any alarms to the appropriate nursing staff of Charge Nurse
  13. Verifies orders in computer system before noting as completed
  14. Requisitions tests as ordered, completes necessary forms and notifies consultations timely
  15. Assists in directing patients/families as needed; treats all with respect
  16. Interacts professionally with patient/families and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary
  17. Demonstrates ability to utilize the electronic record
  18. Demonstrates ability to assist with patient positioning, picking up and delivering items to other departments, and assists in setting up and taking down of traction
  19. Demonstrates organizational ability through effective use of time and equipment
  20. Demonstrates role reflective of unit and organizational goals; communicates with patients, visitors, co-workers, physicians and other health care members
  21. Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities
  22. Performs all other department related duties as assigned by the RN

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion AND/OR Agree to attend and successfully complete a Michigan State Certified Nurse Aide training program and pass State of Michigan certification exam upon hire 
  • BLS certification within 3 months of hire
  • Knowledge of computers/keyboard
  • Data entry experience
  • Medical terminology knowledge

Preferred: 

  • Previous work experience or training as a Unit Clerk and Nurse Aide
  • Previous data entry experience
